It is important that engine components and assemblies are free from leaks. Engines contain several components such as the: engine block, pistons, cylinder head, crankshaft, camshaft, valves and oil pan. Many of these components require leak testing.
All parts of the motor are bolted to the engine block, which is where combustion takes place. A water cooling jacket in an engine is a series of holes through the engine block connected by inlet and outlet valves to the radiator that all require leak-tight connections and precise valve flow allowances. Pistons are gas-tight cylinders comprised of pumps, gas compressors, hydraulic & pneumatic cylinders used to transfer expanding gas force from the cylinder to the crankshaft. The cylinders, seals, pumps, valves and ports within an engine must all leak tested to ensure the proper amount of liquid or gas flows through the engine. Oil pan leak testing is also necessary because theses pans store the oil used during engine lubrication.
