WHAT IS THE MASS FLOW METHOD IN LEAK TESTING?

The mass flow method in leak testing is a precise technique used to detect leaks by measuring the rate of air flow through a sealed system. Unlike other methods that rely on pressure decay or tracer gases, this approach quantifies the flow of air required to maintain constant pressure, making it ideal for applications where accurate leak quantification is crucial. Some of the application includes valves seats, gear boxes, hydraulic components, injectors and more…

MASS FLOW METHOD FOR LEAK TESTING

MASS FLOW METHOD

ATEQ’s Mass Flow technology measures air leakage by converting the mass of air passing through a laminar flow element into a precise leak value, such as cm³.atm/h. If a part leaks, air flows through the Mass Flow device, which accurately measures and quantifies the leakage.

Unlike traditional systems, our technology handles large leaks without needing a reset and avoids using heating elements, reducing sensitivity to contamination. Designed for high-pressure applications, it delivers accurate results at pressures up to 20 Bar (300 PSI). Additionally, advanced temperature compensation ensures reliable performance even in challenging conditions.

Steps for Mass Flow Leak Testing

  1. Prepare the Object: Seal the object and connect it to the mass flow testing system.
  2. Pressurization: Introduce air or gas into the object to reach a set test pressure.
  3. Stabilization Phase: Allow the system to stabilize, ensuring pressure distribution and temperature equalization.
  4. Flow Measurement: Measure the flow rate of air or gas required to maintain the pressure.
  5. Analysis: Evaluate the flow rate to determine the presence and size of leaks.

Example of Applications

Benefits

  • High Sensitivity at Low Pressures: The mass flow method is highly effective at detecting leaks even at very low pressures, making it suitable for applications like vacuum systems.

  • Quantifiable Leak Results: Unlike pressure decay, mass flow provides a direct measurement of the leakage rate, offering precise and actionable data.

  • Consistency for Large Volumes: This method is particularly stable for testing large-volume parts, ensuring accurate results without flow instability caused by volume variations.
