A leaky ink cartridge is never a good thing. Not only does leaked printer ink make a huge mess, but it also renders the ink cartridge useless if it is empty, and ink cartridges are not cheap. It is an application that ATEQ is very familiar with.
The port where the the ink flows from the cartridge to the printer is a good access point to use for a direct differential pressure decay leak test during production. The port on the cartridge can be attached to a tube that connects to an ATEQ leak tester, like the F620. The test cartridge and a reference cartridge are pressurized with air and then the leak tester looks for a drop in pressure.
Once the cartridge body is deemed airtight during a direct leak test, it is advisable to then perform a final indirect leak test once the cartridge opening is sealed up to make sure there is no leak in the seal. This can be done by putting the final assembled cartridge in a chamber and pressurizing or pulling a vacuum on the chamber and looking for a leak.
